A reliable CCTV system starts before any camera is mounted. The first step is a site assessment that identifies entry and exit points, blind spots, lighting conditions at different times of day, and the areas that matter most to the operation — cash points, storage, parking, and perimeter boundaries.
Camera selection follows from that assessment, not the other way around. Coverage of a wide parking area calls for different lenses and placement than a cash counter that needs clear facial detail. Lighting also matters: areas with strong backlighting or low light at night need cameras and settings suited to those conditions, not a one-size-fits-all model.
Storage and retention also need to be planned early. How long footage needs to be kept, and how many cameras will be recording continuously versus on motion, affects the storage capacity and network bandwidth required — decisions that are easier to get right at the design stage than after installation.
Finally, a CCTV system should be tested and commissioned before handover — confirming that every camera has the coverage and image quality intended, that recording and storage are working as configured, and that the system is genuinely ready for operational use rather than simply installed.
