Conventional lighting is either on or off, at full brightness, regardless of how a space is actually being used. Intelligent lighting control — using protocols such as DALI or DMX — allows brightness, colour temperature and scenes to be adjusted to the time of day, the activity in the room, or the amount of natural daylight available.

The comfort benefit is direct: a meeting room, a hotel lobby and a hospital corridor all have different lighting needs, and a controlled system can switch between scenes automatically instead of relying on someone adjusting switches manually.

The efficiency benefit follows from the same control: dimming, scheduling and daylight-linked adjustment reduce unnecessary energy use compared to fixed, full-brightness lighting, and can extend the working life of the fittings themselves.

Lighting control is usually planned alongside the building's broader automation strategy, since scenes are often triggered by the same schedules, sensors or scenarios used for climate and security systems.
