Structured cabling: what to consider before a building is finished.

Almost every system covered in this Insights section — networks, CCTV, access control, telephony, AV — ultimately depends on cabling. Structured cabling is the standardized, organized approach to running that cabling, so that every outlet, switch and device connects back to a predictable, documented structure rather than an ad-hoc mix of cables added over time.
The best time to plan structured cabling is before a building's walls and ceilings are closed — pathways, containment and outlet locations are far cheaper to install during construction than to retrofit afterward. This is why cabling design is usually one of the earliest technology decisions on a project.
A structured system is also easier to maintain and expand. Because cabling follows a documented standard, adding a new device, moving an office, or tracing a fault is far more straightforward than in a building with undocumented, mixed cabling.
For projects already built without structured cabling, an upgrade is still possible, though it typically requires more careful planning around existing pathways and finishes. Either way, the goal is the same: a connectivity backbone that the rest of the building's technology can depend on.
